I searched for answers on this topic, but didn't come up with much.

I am running out of fuel when the tank is 1/2 full (or empty).

The complicating factor is that I have a greasecar conversion. At the moment, It is having fuel delivery issues as well.

I have new filters in, but that doesn't seem to be the problem. It almost seems like one of the fuel lines into the IP is blocked or that the lift pump isn't working at full pressure. Tried some techron over the weekend, doesn't seem to be in the injectors.

Has anyone ever heard of a lift pump failing?

Or does anyone have additional ideas?

(this seemed to have happened progressively. First, I ran out before the reserve fuel light came on, now it is at half a tank.)

(car is an 84 300td with a greasecar kit installed and around 5000 miles on mostly virgin veg oil.)

Are you using Pollack valves? Those are known to fail, resulting in all sorts of fun things, like fuel starvation, fuel mixing, etc.

I think I have heard something about something similar happening when you accidentally switch your fuel line and your return line?


Take a close look at the diagram in the back of your book, and compare it to your setup. You will probably have to climb under the car to figure out which pipe is the return and which pipe is the fuel line...

Fell off the WVO bandwagon when people started trying to charge $2.50 a gallon for dirty vegetable oil.

I am pretty sure he is using the proprietary Greasecar 3-way valves. These also have known to leak. In my Greasecar kit the valves seemed that all the nuts and screws were loose. I made sure everything was snug before I installed it. I also took made sure there was no air leak by taking a Mity vac to it and testing the pressure.

surfblau, As far as your car starving with only a half of tank of fuel, I would check the tank strainer at the bottom of your fuel tank. Many times there is a possibility that the purge process during shut down is not complete and some vegetable oil can get into the diesel tank. This diesel and vegetable mixture will act like a solvent and clean your tank walls. All the sediment will then get stuck at the tank screen. When you have a full tank, there will be enough pressure to push through the screen. But once you have a half of tank the pressure drops and it is not strong enough to push through.

So I would check those two things first. Especially if you have a combination of the two, then it make the problem worst.
