Red face how long should the series GP relay stay on?

I have installed pencil style GP's and used the original wire, and GP relay like on the Diesel Giant site pictorial. however, the first set I used failed in 3 months, now they were used plugs, so they could have been in service for years before I put them in my 79TD. I bought a new set of large body pencil plugs, and put them in, and they worked great, but I decided to test further, and found the GP relay does not stop putting out power until the car is started. I do not know if this is normal or not.
I have a donor 80 TD to pull the parallel style relay out of, and the full wiring harness too, but not sure if I should or not. I think I can figure out the wiring to install the new relay and harness if you guys think it is a problem.
Testing revealed that with the GP's disconnected, and the VOM testing power at the fuse, there is never a time where the relay drops voltage until either the car starts, or you turn off the key. is this normal?

My 300D is the same way, stays on about 20 seconds. However my 240D has an upgraded relay, and it varies in length depending on how cold it is, if its warmed up it will stay on for maybe a second or to, however in the winter it stays on for upwards of 30 seconds in my experience.

so 60 seconds and counting is not a good sign then... ok, I will look into replacing it, or upgrading it to the parallel one from the 80TD... I wanted to have individual wires anyway...
Thanks.
