Removing center driveshaft support & bearing

Hi all :

I tried to replace the center bearing & mount on my '81 240d and was unsuccessful in removing the 26 y.o. bearing from the rear shaft. Getting the lock ring off was hard enough but the bearing & mount resisted all of my excessive pounding & cursing. Made me crack the my Coors before noon ...

Does anyone know a specific puller that will work with this setup? The rental pullers at a local car place were too small. I need to place a harbor freight order today (for the compression tester) and am hoping to get the correct puller as well.

Additionally I only dropped the front section of the drive shaft in order to replace the front flex disc. Is it best to pull the whole shaft in order to replace the center bearing? My inexperienced best guess is "no" but what have others done?

Many thanks;
Steve A.

I found a large 2-jaw puller at Sears that had no problem getting this bearing off the driveshaft. I can get you a part number this evening, but you'll do fine if you just go into the Sears tool section. It has adjustments in the way it can go together (three holes in each jaw) and looks like a versatile puller.

If you can get the p/n that would be great! Otherwise I'll head over to Sears tonight with the new bearing assembly in hand for sizing.

Hi,

I just did this job on a 190D. The very easy solution to removing the bearing is just to take a cut off wheel or Dremel tool and cut the bearing off. Use the cut off wheel until there is just a small amount of the bearing remaining and knock the rest off with a hammer and chisel. It took probably two minutes.

Good luck,
Tom
