no coolant overflow tank? 80 300D Euro

This is going to sound really dumb, but... my Euro 300D (1980) has no coolant expansion tank -- just an overflow tube down to below the radiator. I can't find any cooling system diagrams specific to a Euro 300D -- is this normal?

Thanks!

Normal. My 1980 240D also just has the overflow puke hose. I wonder if the same radiator can be used, and just add an exp. tank and whatever hoses are necessary....

Thanks, all. Were the early US W123 300D's like this, or was this a Euro thing? I don't recall seeing any others w/o expansion tanks. Then again, there are plenty of things I don't recall, I am sure.

your 84 turbo does not have an overflow tank, it has a pressurized expansion tank. with a hose that dumps overflow on the ground.

There are aftermarket overflow tanks that can be used. A lot of American cars from the 60's did not have an overflow catch tank. Adding them let the cooling system pull back in what it decided to puke out. I do not know if this will work for the MB or not.

My 77, 300D, bought new, did not come with an expansion tank, don't know what year they put them in, but by 83, they were there.

Sorry for the in proper use of item names. basically i ment that the 84 has a hose connected to another tank other than the radiator. While the 83 euro has a hose going to underneath the radiator.... sorry for the confusion guys

the hose going straight down is a normally asperated thing.

the turbos use the pressurized expansion tank.

yes, they do, but they STILL have the puke hose that dumps out on the ground if the cap fails, or if you pop the cap with pressure on the system.
