Got the a new toy

well went today and got the girlfriends new 82 240D got it up on the trailer fine got it home no problem, then we go to unload it crank crank crank then it makes some awful sounds and no start look in the valve cover no cam rotation, so I guess we found the noise in the engine so I pulled the motor in it havent gotten it apart yet but when I took the valve cover off the cam stopped where non of the valves were down so my question is what are the chances it didnt hurt anything the engine never started just cranked while I have it out I will probably put a head gasket and do a valve job on it anywho but it would be good to know, the chain ended up being broken into 2 pieces and it cracked the valve cover where it got jammed up under it otherwise the car looks real good no major rust so thats a major plus Ill try and get some pictures of the processs up

I'd say if it has good compression, leave it alone.
