It will be nice to finally see some competition in the diesel car business-there's been WAYYY too few choices for too long, maybe some of that famous Honda quality will help diesel get rid of its (undeserved) bad name.

Note that's the European Accord, which is a completely different car than the Accord sold in the U.S. Over on the left hand side of the pond we get it all dolled up as the Acura TSX. It's quite a bit smaller than the U.S. Accord. So don't expect 60MPG out of a vehicle the size & weight of the U.S. Accord.

The current jetta diesels with a 5 speed manual routinely get 50+ on the highway. The Columbus TDI Drivers club, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/columbustdidrivers/, will do the 5th gear swap out for free if you show up to a GTG with the gear in hand and help out with everything that is going on. That will put you up in the 60mpg range. You loose a bit of performance in 5th but all reports show it as still having plenty of guts.

I take fuel economy claims with a grain of salt... so should everyone else here who commonly hear claims of 30+ mpg in a W123 or W126 turbocharged diesel.

Even a jump from 50 to 60 mpg is a 20% jump in efficiency... a big boost!

Don't get me wrong - I'm all for the Accord diesel. I just don't trust the mpg claims, especially for a car the size of the Accord.

I find it interesting that people would desire switching from a Mercedes to a Honda. I sometimes wonder if people do not care what they drive so long as its cheap to maintain.

OTOH, it would be awesome if there were more diesels along these shores. Especially engines without the urea injection system for 2010 like Honda has planned.

The new ones are not so bad for a $20k car. But they are pretty crude compared to say a W211. Which considering that they cost half as much would make sense.

I actualy like the new Honda Accords, I think for the money they make a damn fine car. Only downside is they still use a timing belt.

I'm sure the accords are fine, they just don't interest me very much. It's the kind of thing I might buy for my kids; cheap, low maintenance, pretty safe, and I wouldn't feel too bad if they trashed it (in other words, disposable).

Each too his or her own, I guess. I agree, being cheap on fuel is not the only reason I drive my 240Ds and wouldn't abandon them for a "little tin box" thats nearly impossible too work on and looks like most everything else thats out on the road.

The TDI guys are a pretty reliable group. They post what they see. For example:

"Fellows, My mpg's this past winter has been fabulous; between 49 and 51 miles per gallon ... winter. I was down to a pitiful 42-43mpg. ;-) "

It looks like I over stated a bit by saying 50+. Maybe I should have said 48+.

sorry, I just mean that the new diesels are so powerfull and efficient, that with the computerization and 6speed trannys large wheels, and so on and so fourth, the newest models can surely get over 50MPG and 60MPG should not be too far off. I believe it. I am just not interested in it.
I may someday go to a 124, but I don't see myself going beyond that unless some serious redesigning happens.

Yeah same here. Its like my moms new Rav4. Sure its nice, and drives pretty well, but it just doesn't do anything for me. Its like a horizontel elevator!

It gets good fuel mileage, mid to high 20's around town, should crack 30 on the highway. Not bad for a little SUV.

You think that's bad-try driving an xB on bumpy roads sometime-more like a horizontal pogo-stick! The thing that is exciting about all these makes bringing diesel back increases the odds of another small Mercedes diesel returning to the market (such as the C240 or A class body styles)-then we can afford new luxury again (& afford to drive it too)-and preferably spend more time driving it than working on it!

They rated my 99 E300 Turbodiesel at 36 highway. I believe it. Hypothetically, I could get 33 cruising at 85 mph

Yep your right.....it is all a matter of choice. if It helps to create a competitive "diesel market" in the States by broadening the diesel appeal and availability to the masses I'm all for it!
