300SD How does the trunk work?

I am trouble shooting some vacuum leaks and trying to resolve some A/C issues since I am messing with the mighty vac what is the proper way for the doors to lock and the trunk to unlock. Right now I push the door locks down and they stay locked, but I have to push each one down separately. I though I read that the driver door controlled all doors or something. Also I can open the truck with the key only. Is that the normal operation? Another question is what is that pump type thing in the spare tire well? Also is the fuel door connected to this all as well and does it lock?

Lots of question but I have found nothing that tells me what the normal operation is for these systems. I have done tons of searching of this board and been able to diagnose must of my A/C and tranny shifting problems. Thanks to all the gurus out there.

the pump in the trunk actuates the locks in all doors, trunk, and fuel door. WHEN it works. I believe the front door has electrical switches connected to the pump for the lock mechanism. that is where I would (and will soon...) start. get the pump to work off the door lock.
then go from there to figure out what actuators are not working, or leaking.

Yes, the drivers door lock is the "switch" to activate the pump in the trunk. Open the trunk and listen for the pump to cycle when you lock/unlock. On mine, I replaced the flex line at the pump and no more troubles. Maybe you will be as fortunate.
