What is this car Ive seen at the junkyard

It was a euro 84 mercedes ,just like the 84 300d I own , but it has a inline 6 cylinder gas motor, never seen one ,is it rare?I was beginning to think some one took a diesel out of a late model mb and did a transplant til I saw the spark plugs.

not really rare, just that the diesels outlasted the gassers by a wide margin so even the wrecking yards don't have many any more. It's the M110 DOHC six, had been in use since the early seventies, also used in the R107 roadsters.. A sweet running engine if injected and not choked by emissions.

280E...that one was probably a Gray car; the 123 version only sold in the US 1977-81.

Here's one (note the evil ACC servo in the lower left):

yep.

i have an 84 euro 280e.

i disagree that the 110 gas engine in injected form is less rugged than a diesel. perhaps less than a 616 or 617 na but more rugged than a turbo motor or any of the 60_ series of diesels, imho.

The 110 is an amazing piece of engineering for it's time. When Detroit was still selling it's pushrod engines, the 110 was already cranking out 175+ hp out of it's DOHC 2.8 liters.

yep. that is right at one hp per cubic inch. not bad. it was nt too long before that that was what you expected from a racing engine.

Whats even better is that it was a Hemi and still made all that HP with only 2 valves per cylinder.
