Some years ago I had finally made it to the point where buying new was practical, warranties and all, no more getting dirty and being frustrated with old worn-out cars. I eventually made it to the point where I bought my first Mercedes, being a quattro guy, and chose a completely loaded '91 300TE 4matic, over $74k plus luxury taxes.

After a few years, with perfomance and reliability that lagged behind what I was used to from my quattros, I sold the 4matic, and good riddance. I loved driving that car, albiet with an AWD system that couldn't hold a candle to the performance of the quattro system, but the repair bills. I swore off Mercedes cars.

Then one day not so long ago I passed a little 190D by the road, vented fender staring at me, OMG! I didn't know that they made a turbodiesel 201! I must have it!

I always loved diesels, wanted one in '91 but they didn't make a diesel wagon in '91, would probably still have the TE if it were a RWD turbodiesel.

To me, diesel makes Mercedes. If it isn't diesel, it's just another car. I have since sold that little turbodiesel, handlng that would run circles around my 124s, and will remember it fondly.

My good memories of cars include cars with unique personalities, from my TR6 to the 190D turbo, sadly the gas Mercedes doesn't often come up as a fond memory.

Yes, I have a problem, it's diesel smoke. For all of us who think of tap-magic as pot-porrie (SP?), it's "give me diesel, or give me death". There is no reason to own an old car, unless it's an interesting one.

I assume you mean potpourri? Yeah, not keen on that smell, but as a kid I'd roll the window down as we'd pass the local truck stop and just sniiiiiiffffffff!

Well said-I agree an old car is no fun without a personality-why else would we all name our Benzes? The notion of a diesel in a car has fascinated me since I was a kid-I remember the old 123 commercials on TV and wondering what a "turbo diesel" ran like. I figured a diesel was what was in a truck, so in a car it had to be FAST, not pulling a big trailer and all. And a TURBO? What is a turbo? I didn't know yet, but it had to be fast, it certainly SOUNDED fast...and a TURBO DIESEL? Great Goshamighty, it had to be the fastest car on Earth!

I would find out it was not quite that way, but the intrigue never faded. For me, Mercedes IS diesel as well.

Yeah, the "turbo" button on my computer made it faster, must be something to that turbodiesel thing.

Lightbulb A solution for packrats.....

I live out beyond what most folks consider to be the boonies.....so collecting stuff over time isn't really a problem as far as the neighbors go.....however....I have come up with a solution that keeps the "stash" manageable......

5 year Plan......if it hasn't moved in 5 years, it's time to get rid of it!!!

If you fool with old carz, tractors, trucks (note the Power Wagon in my sig.) and other assorted mechanical doo-dads......stuff just accumulates......I must have at least 4 dead weed whackers out in the barn, one never knows when you might need something to fix something else with......and then there are Gravely carcases.......

SB

Note: the price of steel scrap is up at the present time.....!!!
