Replacement GM / Harrison R4 compressor for 1983 300SD

It is time to replace the leaking GM / Harrison R4 A/C compressor (leaking out back plate seal) on my 1983 300SD beater. I know that it is far better to buy new but because of budget $ , I will have to go with a rebuilt specd on a GM vehicle to get the best price - ebay?) . Which GM models ( for what vehicle and year ) and years will fit ( and possible A/C delco part #s too ) ? Thanks

(btw - I had another post here - GM & Aftermarket A/C Compressors vs MB compressors on a Sanden switchout but never found that Sanden adapter that my friend had on his 1985 300D )

worth a look.

Also, techchoiceparts (or something like that) in Midlothian, TX sells on Ebay often. The phone # is in the archives somewhere. They know their compressors!!

EDIT: Found it: post #4........Notes on AC Compressor Replacement - Turning and adding oil

YES. Tech Choice Parts in Midlothian.
Great price, cheaper than rebuilt. Really know their stuff.

I did the same in my 300SD, 1983.

I have been through a few R4s new and rebuilt. The new ones come with those leak prone suction side GM seal washers for the ports, The rebuilds have the o-rings. My new ackits $300 GM seal R4 locked up after a year and leaked (R12)! I now have the $154 Behr (o-ring) rebuild form www.europartsdirect.com. So far So good! No leaks! Keeping my fingers crossed! The quality of the Behr seems better than the Apco Air, Champion, Four Seansons and others R4 rebuilds I have had. To aide in compressor life I used BVA 4 napthetic mineral oil 300 visc. Good luck.

can anyone recommend a good compressor oil ? Or can I just use the stuff that comes with my recharge kit??? Im looking at the enviro-safe product.

This guy likes Frigi Quiet: http://dieselgiant.com/repairyourac.htm

Also, Can I just add oil to my compressor to ensure it is not dry and not seize it prematurely?

Cheers!

Thanks for the Europarts Direct source.

What is the difference between the two receiver driers offered? Hansa is a lot more expensive than Behr - why?

The Hansa (made in Germany) has a clear site glass on top to see refrigerant flow, The lesser expensive one may not have the sight glass.

rbardolov, I recommended a good compressor oil (BVA mineral oil for R12). for other refrigerant blends or 134A, I do not know.

I bought a new R4 from the local autoparts store last year (advanceautoparts) - still works.
