Can't get started

When I crank my key, the only sound I hear is the glow plug relay clicking off. My Neutral/park safty switch was by-passed about a month ago. Maybe my starter motor is toast? Anyone with any experience or pointers in this area?

what voltage do you have at the battery?
what voltage do you have at the starter terminal block?
what voltage do you have while you are cranking the car?
if you short the terminals on the starter terminal block will the car crank? it may be your starter, it may be your ignition switch it may be your battery it may be the wiring to the starter, or even the terminals on the battery.

I haven't checked voltages, but the battery is new, only 6-8 weeks old, and has loads of power. there is good power at the starter terminals on the inner fender, as when I try to jump the starter directly there w/ needle nose pliers I get a healthy spark, but again all I hear is the glow plug relay switching off. How would I test the started otherwise? It's a holiday monday here, so my resources are pretty limited

oooh, you have tested by shorting the terminal, and you get a healthy spark, that sounds like you have a shorted starter. or a locked up motor. if you are shorting the terminals, you are not hearing the GP relay, you are hearing the starter solenoid. try hitting the starter with a hammer handle or a broom handle.
you may have bad contacts in the solenoid.

Check your engine-chassis ground strap (near the starter).

I'm having the exact same problem, so I'll be reading this thread closely. I hear the solenoid click and the interior lights dim (when the door is open) but no spin. Can't get under the car where it is to check connections, will have to wait till the wife gets home to push start it. How hard is it to replace the starter?

one insight onto this. When i bought the the 300SD I had to drive it through a puddle 2 feet deep. The car crossed fine (there were several trucks stranded in the puddle... Gassers!!!), but of course the starter had been submerged. I try to dry it afterwards but to no avail (anyways it looked old and greasy!!).

Lond story short... I ordered a new starter and not problem since.

The simptoms were exactly the same. A single click when cranking, battery at 13.8V, 13.5V at the terminals. healty spark when shorted.
