Our K-1 is clear also. I use a great cardlock station (unmanned station) that sells K-1, taxed and untaxed gas and diesel. Can you say smorgasbord!

Live it up while you can with the clear kerosene. It was clear here in jersey until late winter when it all became red dyed.

I'm sure it was. There are grades of kero other than K-1.

There are only two grades and the only difference is sulfur content. 1-K is low sulfur and is for use in heating equipment without a flue.

...there are two grades of kerosene: 1-K and 2-K. The former grade is low-sulfur kerosene, with a maximum sulfur content of 0.04 percent by weight, and the latter can contain up to 0.30 percent sulfur. The sulfur content is important because the sulfur in the fuel forms some pretty nasty pollutants when the fuel is burned. Keeping the sulfur content as low as it is in 1-K kerosene allows the fuel to be burned without a flue to remove the exhaust products from the room (such as in a kerosene space heater). 2-K kerosene must be burned only in appliances with a flue.

Other than sulfur content, the two grades of kerosene have identical properties.

Yeah, I just did a google seach. turns out the g'ment requires K-1 to be dyed red, since 1997. I haven't bought K-1 in 3-4 years, but it was still clear when I did. I guess enforcement of the dye is not a priority. I don't know why not, we must be losing hundreds of dollars in taxes.

Just for grins, I called the local kerosene supplier here in Houston this afternoon. A 55-gallon drum of K-1 is $240 delivered -- so a bit over $4/gallon. Not a bargain to run on its own, but if you're using it to thin out SVO or something like that, it might make a lot of sense.

Cheers, John

WOW I know out of the pump here it's still under $3 gallon (or was last weekend)

I envy you guys that can get kerosene. Where I am it's next to impossible to find. I have to use Jet-A from the local airport, currently right a $4 a gallon

Dukegrad98 ,whos the Houston supplier ? Ive been looking for K1 in Houston.

Anyone know why the price is so different for the Houston area? I thought Houston had the biggest refinery complex in the US.

Well, I said "patenting" and while they can register the trademark of BD123, they cannot patent it. I was jsut out there yesterday.

With all the home brewers , et al, out there, the mix is something that isnt unique.

Funny, as I put my "numbers guy" hat on and reckoned how you could make a buck at this long run from teh companies persepctive, I deduced that you'd have to own the means of production, just like Exxon/Mob, Conoco, RD, et all, but in this case you'd be sarting with 20,000 acre canola farms and nearby processing facilities.

Archer Daniles Midland as the major fuel provider for the next millenia?? Not ethanol, that's a gasoline economy stopgap, I mean in GREEN OILS. Hmmm.. hope ADM backs down some in the next market swoon....might have to tuck some in the long-term accounts

That depends on temperature. I can run B100 reliably to 32F-35F. With 30% kerosene, I can run down to -10F. IIRC, kerosene has about 75% of the BTUs of biodiesel, so B70K I would expect to give about 10% less mileage.

Compared to D2, you lose about 2.7% on K-1, a little less than 10% on biodiesel and about 10% on WVO based on BTU/gallon.

You need very little SVO or BD for k1 lubrisity.

Adding a mere 1% of total volume of Bio diesel (soy methyl esters, methyl soyate, etc...) to k-1 will bring the fuel into lubrisity spec.
