1995 E300D low power

i just drove a normally aspirated 1995 E300D with a 606.910 engine, it seemed to have low power, i am certain my 1979 300sd is faster. the customer didn't complain, was here for belt tensioner issues, we don't see too many of these, just wanted to see what the consensious was.

Suspect your turbo is faster off the line.

I drove a '96 (.911) in a hilly part of town once....I think I could have beaten it jogging up to the top of the hill and i'm not much of a jogger.

Showed me then and there I had to have the .962.

It's not slow. Spec for 0-60 is about 12 seconds, and it should be faster than your old OM617 SD. Could be carboned up, more likely is the resonance flaps in the intake need to be cleaned. It has a computer-controlled IP, so if the computer isn't happy, it's gonna be slow. The E300 is a great car if you can find one at a good price, in good condition.

My 95

My 95 e300d 187,000 is pretty slow. I don't expect there's anything wrong with it. Its probably the slowest car I have ever owned, and I've had my share of POS. 0-60 time? Can't imagine. I'm careful at on-ramps and anticipating lane changes on hills. I do notice how often I have the pedal to the metal. Still, it rides so nice at 70, 75, and 80. However, I (and my county cops) can prove to you that it easily goes 48 mph in a 25 mph zone.

IIRC, the W124 606.910 had a mechanically controlled IP.
The 606.912 and 606.962 in the W210 had electronically controlled IPs.

I realized just how thankful I should be for my 606.962 when I drove a 240D for the first time...the whole time I was driving that damn thing the only two pedal positions i used were "idle" and "pedal to the metal." And I was still being out-accelerated by Corollas and Civics.

The 606.910 is electronically controlled. Videos are here:

connerm, something is probably wrong with your E300 if it's that slow. Try a quick check 0-60 with a stopwatch and let us know what the time is.

Have you ruled out the basics like fuel filters and IP timing?

I have to say, I learned a lot watching those videos. However, they do in fact refer to the 606 in the 1996 and 1997 W210, not the W124. The narrator even referenced the fact.

First thing I would check is the MAF. Spray the element with isopropyl alcohol to get any oil deposits off the wire.

If I ever really get on it, and stay on it, the trans will not shift into the last gear until I let off the pedal momentarily, then it shifts into final gear and I go on my way. I don't usually do this more than a couple of times a year. I've checked the flaps and they're clean and operating. Its worked for me for 80k miles so far. I might try to do the 0-60 test. Can I get a rolling start from the top of a hill and report back?

This model does not have a MAF sensor.

I knew that too. The 95 doesn't even have a CEL. Sweet. Primary reason I'll buy another one.

LOL
I think we can give these older cars a break, now, can't we?

Agreed wholeheartedly. When I first started on this forum 4 years ago, 606 info took a big back seat to the 'older' models. There seems to be much more 606 discussions now. Not a complaint...just an observation.
