Talking 603 TURBO+ 5-SPEED= project super turbo!

Spotted a non-running 190E 2.3 on craigslist for $400 with a 5-speed trans! Called for it and it was still available, luckily i had the cash in my wallet! because a crap load of people were calling him for it. (so he told me)

Anyway $360 later i got a 190E with a 5speed in it. Carb is whats preventing it from running and it has low miles (150K)

Now begins my 5-speed conversion on my 87 300D. Along with the continuation of the AMG suspension upgrade. After im done with the trans conversion and suspension upgrade......then comes some performance upgrades

Pictures soon to follow.

The 190E should be fuel injected so the can't be carb problems there. The E stands for "Einspritzung" which means fuel injected.

Awesome!
Someone around here had a 300D 5-speed, but the 603 was N/A.
I'd love to get a Euro 6-speed from a W210 and bolt it up to my turbo 606, but I fear the car's electronics would make it prohibitive.

Huh. I always wondered what the "E" stood for, I assumed it just meant "gasser"

Sounds like a good project. I was just draming of doing the same thing yesterday. I'm now planning to just try adapting a newer 5 speed to the 617...I don't think the wife would let me have 3 MBs.

Ok after bringing the car home and looking at the engine. I think the guy is a total idiot (and so am i for believing him) on the ad he listed not running due to bad carb.

My dad and i start taking crap apart on the engine and sure enough we see the metal injector lines but with the injectors missing. The throttle body was in the trunk which was probably what he thought was a carb, as well as 4 ugly looking injectors.

But anyway i dont care much for the engine. It has low miles but it looks neglected (oil black as diesel oil) and the ricer pipe in the back tells me he might have beat the crap out of it by speeding.

Pics coming later this afternoon!

stay tuned...

The 2.3 is actually a very good engine. If cared for, which may not be your case, they can last nearly as long as the diesels. I've seen a few for sale with 200K-300K that are still running. My 230CE which has the Euro version of the engine is running strong with over 170K miles on it, doesn't burn a drop of oil, has about as much hp as the 603 and gets about the same mileage. Plus it's easy to work on.
I'd bet there was nothing wrong with the FI system and that the real problem was in the ignition module.

How do you "beat the crap out of it", .... by speeding?

Ever heard of the Autobahn?

Let me clarify, black oil + ricer pipe + racing = beating the crap out of an engine. I would think if the car would have had clean oil and didnt look so trashy i would think the engine is still good.

Still have to provide you guys photos but i cant fine the damn cable to my camera
