We've owned both the 300CD and 300SD since new - my wife thinks her SD handles better than my CD - I don't share that opinion, but her car does handle nicely at speed on the curvy roads around the lake where we live.

The fiver is a much better engine, if you are speaking of the 617.

The newer engine is just a lot more fussy to keep running right, and a lot harder to get right.

ONce you bring a 616 or 617 up to snuff you have a very reliable engine for a long long time.

Like Tom above, my vote is for the OM617 five cylinder, far more durable than the six.

well i found my new car. i guess its true if you wait long enough you'll find what you wanted.
i bought a 1985 300D turbo and the best part of it is 52000 miles. always garaged driven and owned no lie by a now 87 yr old lady[1st owner], for the first 41k miles, then a relitave for the last 11k.
i'll be picking it up on the 25th

i now need some advise on how much to sell my 1979 240D for

189k miles some rot on LR quarter pannel, jack points and door bottoms.
recent repairs are: pads & rotors, radiator, m. cylinder, w. pump, battery, vacuum lines & alignment. the A/c and cruise are inop. i drive almost every day to work and it drives great. it will need some tires soon, and thats about it. photos of it are on the link below.

PM me with some info when you decide on a price for your 240D. I'm starting to resent how fantastically rusty my 300SD is. I fear it will crack in half by spring.
