Transmission has to be at the proper temperature to be able to check the fluid level. Safe be is to change it and make sure it is proper level, either by the dealer or getting dipstick and searching here for tempertures.
Also, I am envious of the Unimog in your sig, regardless of condition.

I do not own one so can not say with certainty but I believe that the splined socket for the inj's has two parallel slots cut the length of it so as not to interfere with the return line nipples. I don't think that is something most people could orientate and fabricate correctly the first time.....
From looking, it would probably also be ~4-5" long and very thin walled.

I'd bet your poor fuel economy is due to the car being driven too gently all these years. I had the same mileage numbers when I bought my '98 at 115K miles. Now, 35K miles later I am seeing 29 around town and low to mid 30's on the highway and it runs smoother and quieter than ever. I'd say just drive it hard for a while, run some diesel purge through it and see what happens. I don't think the beahvior you described from the transmission is abnormal. They do run around 2500-2600 RPM at 70MPH and do rev a little to speed up. Frankly, I am not even sure if these cars have a lockup TC.
As for your broken glow plug, it usually entails pulling the head, as others have said, though, depending on which one it is you may be able to drill it out. If the climate where you are in NC is temperate in the winter you may get away with 5 good plugs and be OK (it will always start rough on 5 until that 6th cylinder starts firing) but it is unlikely to do long term damage to run it that way - it only takes 10 seconds or so of running to build up enough heat to start compression-ignition. If you do pull the head, then, obviously replace them all and use anti-seize when putting them in to prevent this from happening again.

Marty, thanks. I'm still learning what is normal on these cars. The UNIMOG taught me that the German's perception of "normal" isn't always what I'm used to!
I've been working around the stumbling and missing in the mornings on start up. I've just been revving it up to about 1300 RPM for about 30 sec. and it seems to do pretty good. Funny thing about driving it hard, it does seem to run better after a full throttle run up the on ramp. I'll do the recommended PM on the tranny and see if I can find a dipstick somewhere. I'll also probably pull the head at some point in the future. In addition to doing the GP's, I'll probably have some head and valve work done while I'm in there since I can never leave anything alone!

The inj and DV sockets are on page 19 under the special tools tab above.

Yeah, I saw that. The price is listed as $53 for each type of socket!

The 722.6 has a lockup TC, but it doesn't completely lock. Some slippage is allowed between the engine and trans. This was done to improve the smoothness of the drivetrain. I was an MBCA member back when the 722.6 was introduced, and they had a writeup on the new transmission.
I had a dead glowplug on the OM606 turbo. Stumbling and missing on a cold start is normal operation with a dead cylinder. About 30 seconds of running and some grey smoke before it settles down is normal. In the end I spent the big bucks to have the head pulled and the broken plug extricated. - JimY |

Why? Bring it to a shop. You don't have SDS even if you have a dipstick

Getting back to the lock up question, I read a description of the transmission and it specifically says that it employes a lock up. However, mine sure acts like it's not locked up...
