Do Ga$$er W126s Require Premium Unleaded?

Quick question:

Do all the W126s with Ga$$er engines require premium fuel?

Like the 300SE, 300SEL, 420SEL, 500 and 560 cars - are these all supposed to be running premium?

This is diesel related because we are demonstrating the difference between diesel (fuel of the gods) and putrid, reeking gasolene (fuel of the troglodytes).

From what I can find the 3L M103 requires 91, so I would have to imagine the larger engines would be as high or higher compression ratio and therefore also require premium.

Yes, life is simpler at the dizzle pump ..

I almost wasn't going to even answer that because you insulted the "Persian Perrier" that our cars like to sip.

In a word, however, yes, they do require premium fuel, 91 octane at the least. It is so stated in the owners manual.

My car stickered at over $84,500 as a 1991 model, and it was assumed that the price of gasoline was NOT concern to the customers of a car like that when it was new. Similarly so for the other W126 cars.

Chevron supreme is preferred, because of the techron additive that comes with it. It is supposed to clean out the injectors as you drive.

It has worked, as advdertised, for me over 10 years, and the car is approaching 120,000 miles and the injectors have never been a problem with that car, even though I renewed the injectors at 100,000 when the timing chain was replaced.

Thanks for the information - I knew there would be experience here.

This sorta tempers my enthusiasm when I browse through the EBay ads and see the gas W126 cars.

Well

I can understand premium in the huge V8 and mid sized inline sixes...but the fact that if you buy a 190E 2.3...it requires premium...is shocking to me. A 130HP 2.3 4 cylinder that needs premium...my boobaru would destroy one in a straight line, had the same HP, and took regular!

I hate those cars...

1975-1985 model year gassers do not require premium. 1986-present gassers require premium, with exception to the 1986 190E 2.3. I read that here:

Texaco too, now that they're the same company.

The gas station near me sells "premium high cetane" diesel....seems to give eeeeever so slightly better mpg's/power.....but they offer no credit card rewards or discounts like speedway does....so I go to speedway.

Read your owners manual, but most Mercedes do so its a safe assumption.

I'm getting a gas MB next time around....

Early 80's design, not bad for its day.

diesel vs gasser

If you see the gassers in my signature - and assume what the mpg must be for both - you'll quickly understand why the 300SD is the daily driver (gets about 2x both of the other cars)!

My 16V takes premium. Not a big surprise. On average it costs me an extra $2.00 or $2.50 per fill-up. The car doesn't get driven daily, maybe 2-3 times per week, but if I did. I would only be paying $8-$10 extra per month over regular. The difference is not that great given the overall price of a fill-up.
