It did ignite the fuel, but there was no major explosion. You would have had some nice burns, but nothing close to being fatal.

I have had welding slag in my ear as well, not pleasant. I was welding under a 60 Comet that I put on an S10 pickup frame. Anyway I danced around shaking my head trying to get the hot metal out for a while. It didn't come out my mouth though About 6 months later I had an ear infection. Went to the doctor, he looks in my ear, looks puzzled, looks in the other ear, comes back to the infected ear and looks again. " Ahem... It appears you have a foreign body in your ear. So he flushed and flushed, then brought out the forcepts. Having that dork poke around in there with forcepts hurt worse than the molten metal. In the end he figured it was best to just leave it and it would work its way out. Not sure if its still there or not? This was 5 years ago.
Basically the only way to prevent this accident is ear plugs or muffs.

Not my injury, my helper's

30 years ago I was converting my Sunbeam Alpine from disc wheels to wire knock-offs. This involved changing out the rear axle (no problem) and the front spindles. My father-in-law (now ex) wanted to help. We had the front end up on jack stands with the wheels off.

Somehow he managed to tip over the jack stands and the car landed on him. I had one of those adrenaline moments you read about, I lifted the front end of the car up and he scrambled out. Six broken ribs.

You better believe I don't go under a car without more than one support.

another thing is getting to be in my 40's

Aging is an injury. 3 years ago i did a one day engine swap. How did I do that! The years 20 to 40 are the greatest!

Worst thing for me so far (only been at it 5 years) was when I took a good chunk out of my knuckles on the driveway when then differential fill plug finally broke loose on my 300SD. Now I know why they call it a "death grip".

Yikes! Glad to hear they were able to trace down the route of your infection and get it taken car of.

I've never really had more than the usual burns, scrapes and back problems due to working on my cars and boat. I've usually been pretty good at avoiding any major injuries even though I've had my fair share of precarious situations.

The worst thing I've ever done was slice the ball of my foot off while riding my bike barefoot when I was 13. They stitched it back on but to this day (24 years later) I still don't really have any feeling there.

Not me, but I was working on an old Ford Falcon back in the 60's with a friend wearing a watch with an expandable metal band. Somehow he got the band to touch both the positive post of the battery and the chassis. It welded itself to each end and carried so much current that it burned it's way into my friend's arm. He has a permanent scar on his wrist in the shape of an expandable watch band.

Worked with a service manager at a Chevy dealership back in the 60's. Half his face was scar tissue from a similar event. Very lucky.

My drunk of a grandfather once had my uncle pour gas into a carburettor while he cranked it over, he was in the hospital for a month with burns over most of his body. His digestive tract shut down from the stress. Lesson learned.

I cant top the bolt story, but the other day I was welding a patch in a fender and I was holding it in place from behind with my other hand. So the very first spot weld I place is coincidentally right where my finder was pushing on the metal. I spot welded my freaking finger, it was instant 3rd degree and the skin was all gray... nasty. The good thing about it was that it didn't hurt, but took damn long tome to heal.
