Red face Excessive exhaust

Hi! I have a second hand 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser LTD with a Mercedes 2,2 liter CRD diesel, manual 5 -gear, with which I have a problem with excessive exhaust. The engine is 121 hp . The car has gone about 70,000 miles.

When cruising at any rpm (1700, 2000) and in any gear, after giving just a little more gas, my car omits a substantial cloud of dark brownish exhaust.

I have had the car checked at two local dealers. None of them were able to find anything faulty on their computers. They did however change a switch in connection with the brakes and also changed the mass air sensor. None of these things helped. I hope someone can give me a suggestion to what this might come from. Maybe somebody has experienced this in a Mercedes?

Regards, PT-owner, Norway

A redish brown smoke is an indication of just a little too much fuel for the air available to burn right. So a bad mass airflow sensor is a good guess, but as you said it wasn't the problem. The computer should limit the amount of fuel the engine burns to amount of air brought in. If this car is turbocharged you might have an air leak. Check the EGR system. Excessive EGR will create smoke. Other than that the only thing I can think of is it would be a problem with the injectors injecting too much fuel.

Is it possible the previous owner put a performance chip in it?

Wide open throttle. Has it been consuming more fuel than it normally does lately or anything?

Well, I bought it second hand, so I do not know if it using more than usual. But I measured the consumption to be 0.7 liters per 10 kilometeres (33,6 mpg), which is only slightly above the announced urban consumption (32.8 mpg).

I find it strange in a forum like this that nobody else has had the same experience with the Mercedes 2,2 liter or other diesels!

That's because this forum is predominately American. The only small Mercedes diesels being sold here are in the ML/GL/R/E320 CDI, Mercedes/Dodge/Freightliner Sprinter and Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD. The 2.2L CDI has never been over here in any form.
