interesting.....

So i had my trans fluid changed with Royal Purple as recomended by some people on here, and now its basically impossible to doube clutch 4th without it scratching or grinding.

Should i switch it back to ATF?? or is the damage alreadys done??

BTW 4th gear has always needed to be double clutch due to the fact that the PO towed the car with the rear wheels down and did not dis-connect the driveshafe.

FYI its the 4 speed manual.

Thanks

Towing on the ground should not do that unless the fluid was low.

Towing in neutral should not cause any damage.

So, ... you have shot 4th gear syncro, and have to double-clutch to get it engaged in 4th, and now you can't get them engaged? Try a little more or less RPM when you double-clutch, sounds like the new oil changed how fast the gears spin down when you press the clutch.

The only damage that will occur is grinding gears, and the resulting wear plus metal particles in the fluid.

Actually I once ruined third gear in my 52 pontiac from towing it home from Indianapolis about 70 miles with it in neutral. I thouht it was a peculariarty of the tranny shift mechanism which kept pressure on the shifter while towing that did it. After that it would pop out of gear.

Perhaps something similar happened to this car. Maybe something is wrong with the shifter to do it.

sounds very logical actully. So basically since its a different oil, im going to have to fiddle with the rpm's and clutch until i can find a way to get it into gear without grinding.

Next question is, which is a heavyer weight? ATF or Royal Purple (my guess being the gear oil) which means that i would half to rev up higher??? Cause what im use to with running ATF is after reaching about 45 or so in 3rd ill press the clutch in, take it out of third, release the clutch, push it back in before the oil presure drops, wait for it to drop (assuming fully warmed up) and once the oil presre has dropped to 30PSI then shift into 4th.

Any suggestions on what to do differently??

thanks

Get rid of the gear oil!!!! It is way to heavy to use in a transmission.

really

"Really"! It really made it better? Amazing! Why do you think they specified ATF for that transmission?

They figured that chain saw bar oil would be too thick.
