Interesting that they made the later version for the 240, yet the shifter arms are secured on shafts coming out of the transmission just like the earlier 240 tranny..... Who made the earlier 240 trannies? Was '81 the start of the Getrags I guess?

The old cast-iron units have MBZ numbers (115.xxx.xxx.xx) and the three-point star cast in them but no telling who did the actual manufacturing.

I like the green my self. You could only use 5th for downhill with the 616...

several folks have 616s with five speeds. they report fine service from them. I always thought that my 240s could use another gear.

How do you tell if its a 5 speeder or not? If I am lucky I can tell you why I am asking this tomorrow.

The 1,2,3,4,5,R on the shifter is what clued me in.
The Green interior is my Holy Grail of MB interior colors!!!!!

Why is that? Is it that rare on euro models... even moreso on US rides?

The little NA 4cyl concerns me. Ive started to like a turbo 5.

if looking at a tranny sitting on the ground, the early five speeds as found in the 123s will have an auxiliary section of cast aluminum, iirc, bolted between the tailshaft and the main tranny body, about five inches long.
