if both lights are failing at the same time you have a different issue. especially if rain is part of it.

I might give H4 silver star's a try someday....but for now I have been using the ultra-white "Autopal" Made in India lamps that are in the H4 conversion autopal assemblies I got. One has accumulated moisture though....so I may have to get another. Oh well, they are only $12 Less than a bulb in the store! It has not affected light output or the lamp inside....so I will leave it alone till something bad happens....and until its warmer outside.

I don't know why so many people keep having problems with these.
With those who keep having them fail so early, I really wonder if something in the car's wiring is compromising the lighting, possibly lowered voltage due to old wiring degradation?

With having silverstars on two cars now, I've replaced 1 bulb in about 4 years. That was the sealed beam on the passenger side of my SD, about 1 year after installing both lights.
The driver's side one is still lit, and appears the same color as the new one, so no obvious degradation, but time will tell.

So how much brighter are the silver star sealed beams than a typical lamp? What is the general opinion? Are they as bright or brighter than a lens + H4 bulb setup? Or would it be better to use an H4 bulb + assembly for a silver star?

Personally, if I'd had another H4 assembly, I would be using a pair of H4's.
The only reason I have for that is just that carrying a spare is MUCH easier when it takes up a space 3"x2"x2" rather than 5"x6"x8".

As to color, with 4000k HID on my deceased Subaru, the Silverstars high beams matched the HID for color, rather than the more yellow cast of the basic Halogen H3 bulbs that I replaced.
I thought that they were a little brighter than the stock halogen, but I didn't do any scientific measurements on them.

Sylvania Reply

I just received a reply from Sylvania acknowledging that the Silverstars only last 9-12 months. I suggested to them that they probably ought to have a note or disclaimer on the packaging stating so.

I wrote them yesterday about the short life of the bulbs, 6-12 mos. So, looks like my experience with these bulbs is on target.

I have had Wagner bulbs in my D's that I have not had to replace for a looooong time for a lot less money.

The sealed-beam Silverstars in my 190D lasted only a few months until burning out. The 2 for $10 Philips Halogen bulbs have been in for well over a year.

My cheapo autopal halogen H4 bulbs have been in for a couple months with no issues yet....we'll see how long they last. They provide quite excellent light output...

My dad's car (the SD) has the Sylvania XtraVision halogens, they are quite bright and have been on the car since we bought it over 3.5 years ago.....

The 300D just has standard halogens....seem to work fine....lost one to to a rock a while back. $8 to replace. It also has white fogs....which add a ton of light to the road when you power them up. Very good lighting.
