Unhappy I need some insight on my transmision problems i dont know what to do anymore HELP!!!

So i have a 81' 300SD which i recently replaced the transmision in. I had removed the old one due to the fact that it wouldn't shift into 4th gear and would only drive 45mph. After the install of the new transmision ( i didnt remove the torque converter) i backed the car up a hill about 200ft and went to shift into drive and had no power none of the gears work so i dropped the pan and replaced the filter which had alot of small metal shavings in it, so did the transmision fluid.

Im trying to figure out what I should do next, i have a feeling that the torque conerter went out due to the fact that i drove the car to Los Angeles and back and when i got back kept driving it and then finally discoverd that the transmision fluid was burnt pitch black...... any ideas if any of what i wrote makes sense yes i know i beat my poor mercedes.
