Compressor Clutch shorted Can I change the Clutch

Can I change just the clutch on my W124's AC compressor? It's on an 87 300d.

I was blowing fuses and finally figured out why after about 4 fuses. The clutch would still engage but drew huge current. I measured the Impedance accross it and got .2ohms!!! Ouch! ANyways, I know the clutch is an electromagnet. Is there a fixable part on the compressor?

Possible that inside somewhere the insulation on wires to the magnet's coil shorted to it's grounded chassis?

Granted I've never actually disassembled one myself yet, but my understanding of it is that the clutch/pulley/bearing assy can be pulled off of the shaft without discharging the system and is replaceable. This was from my A/C training back in 94-95. The seal should be in the compressor housing and seal to the shaft itself. They are typically set up with a nut on the end of the shaft, holding the pulley assy on to a tapered shaft with a woodruff key (like the way a tie rod is set up, only with a key in it). If you have the GM R4 type, you could probably go to the wrecker and pop one off of just about anything and have her fixed for pennies.

I've replaced the A/C Clutch/Coil on my '87 wagon and '91 sedan, both were Denso compressors and the job is DIY if you're a DIY'er. I would definately get the clutch/coil from MB. Really not a bad job, you'll need a good set of snap ring plyers and a whole lot of patience because on the '87 space is tight between the front of the compressor and the back of the radiator to say the least but it can be done with only pulling the serp belt.

Good Luck !!
