You want a diesel, you'll have to get the M, R, or GL. I just bought a gas 1998 E320 wagon and love, love, love it. Best Benz I've owned yet by a longshot. Even with the gas engine, I'm getting 27 mpg highway.

I've seen as high as 29MPG on my 2001 wagon. That on a Houston-Dallas run a few months ago. But I only drive 70-ish. The reason we all want diesel - other than a love of mid-range torque - is substantially better mileage. With the 2.7 liter, 5-cylinder diesel (about 175HP) this same car will get 37MPG on the highway.

I'm not holding my breath either, but I'd order one of these in a minute. Perhaps nobody in the marketing chain of command at MBUSA remembers the unexpected and outrageous success of the W123 300TD when it came out--no self-respecting preppie/private school parents would be caught dead without one. I'm betting if they sold an E-class diesel wagon in stripper, medium, and luxury configurations they couldn't make them fast enough and people would happily pay sticker+ for the privilege of waiting months to take delivery.

But, no. Drive by any MB dealer and they are only selling the pimped out models--and to top it off about 60% of the cars on any dealers are silver.

Choice! Give me choice!

So, a little poking around on the web produced this Mercedes Wagon for sale on the Mercedes web site for Spain:

E220 CDI Estate (wagon)

4 cylinder turbo, 2,148 cc
170 HP @ 3,800 RPM
400 NM @ 2,000 RPM
0-100km 9.1 sec
Urban fuel consumption 9.8 litres/100 km (24 mpg)
Highway fuel consumption 5.9 litres/100km (40 mpg)
Average fuel consumption 7.3 litres/100km (32 mpg)
NOTE: conversions calculated at http://www.tdiclub.com/misc/conversions.html.
Transmission: 6 speed manual
Rear wheel drive

It's priced at 43,600 Euros (including tax), which is about 80% of the price for the E350 Wagon.

I'll take one. Where do I sign up?

And Brabus sells chips that can take that to 217hp and 354 lb-ft! That costs $61,724 in USD. I can buy an E320 CDI with nearly that much power for $55,000.

Even better, a chip can take the E420 CDI from 314hp to 375hp and 548 lb-ft to 690 lb-ft! *drool*

My brother rented an E220 CDI wagon during a trip to Germany. He said the acceleration was a bit less than we Americans are accustomed to. But the onboard computer showed 30MPG at 100MPH. Cool.
