New to Mercedes Diesels..when should I change the timing belt?

Hi, I am new New to Mercedes Diesels..when should I change the timing belt? Also, what is this thing called a vacuum pump and whre is it? Finally it runs funny and a friend suggested U should check my P timing. Where is the P? An Also, what is the purpose of the gunsight on the hood? Is that to check your alignment? Finally I have looked all over the engine and I can find oil filter easy enough, of course is that filter near the #1 cylinder on the passenger side of the engine. Yes I did change the oil! Now where is the fuel filter?

Every 60k miles. Also replace the cap, rotor and spark plugs.

And how do you tell which cylinder is #1? I think the numbers fell off mine. And I sure wouldn't want to get my plug wires mixed up.

Update: I asked the folks at Autozone. They said "Don't do nothing until your 'check engine light' comes on." Mine never come on!!! I guess that is a testament to Mercedes engineering.

I am glad you did not mention "blow by".

240d'd were designed with very little blowby. Mercedes engineers intended for them to blowby 1953 VW Beetles, but all other cars were designed to blowby them.

Your timing belt never needs to be changed. You'll notice Mercedes doesn't even sell a timing belt for your car because of this very reason.

best thing to do with your benz is to un-hook the fuel line and light what comes out. when the car burns up, it's ok.
if not, you will have to keep the car and fix it every free minute you have.

Be sure to have a metric crescent wrench and a left hand rachet then you're fixing. They come in really handy. Also, your diesel will run a lot more efficiently, and more powerfully if you get unobtanium spark plugs that fire in all 4 corners of the cylinder.

Don't forget to have your windshield stretched every winter and while you're at it change the air in your tires.

Of course I will just send it to the shop..

You see I am an urban metrosexual and I went to Bornoftherich College and have an MBA and I got my masters from Dadsgotbucks University..the real reason I bought this car was to get one up on my tennis buddy at work, because his looks brand new and its got that Ivy League look...anyway I'm an Investment Banker so I guess I'll pay some buddy to do all this work. after all I dont want to get my nails dirty
