I need a vacuum diagram for an 85 300D please
Thank you for taking the plunge and helping me because I realize how often vacuum related problems are aired here.
As I mentioned, its a 1985 300D and I believe it has never left Canada. I have looked for and haven't been able to find a vacuum diagram for my car. The 1985 Federal doesn't cover all the items and the 1985 California has too much stuff. I have read a couple of previous posts dating back to 2006 on this topic but haven't seen a clear response. Peterschmid is where I've looked at the above 85 Fed/Cali diagrams. A past owner of my car has "played" ( two lines are plugged; one with a golf tee and another with a bolt) with the lines so I am not ruling out that they may now be different from stock. There are some obvious shifting, and central locking problems. I have attached a few photos to show these items that I can't find on any diagram. 1) Overall view 2) Bolted to the drivers side inner fender well. It seems to feed the EGR and Turbo. I've read that plugging these two lines running to the EGR and Turbo could be beneficial. 3) Item bolted to the firewall behind the brake booster. No idea what this is for. 4) Closer view of vacuum lines running off the main line. Note the bolt plugging one line, a golf tee is plugging a lower line underneath, the central lock module(yellow body) isn't plugged in at all. When I have hooked it up, the car won't shut off so I know that there is a big leak somewhere on the other side of the firewall...thats another day. 5) Closer overall view of drivers side inner fender. I feel capable diagnosing my vac problems thanks to what I've already read here with a Mityvac but I want to know what my vacuum system looked like originally with the help of a diagram and input from you all. Any help is appreciated Thanks Blaine |

Thanks Don,
I realize now that my post may have been too long considering the subject, I'm sure the title alone made most skip through the script of the post simply because this subject has been beaten to a pulp. My 1985 300D does NOT match any vacuum diagram I've seen thus far on this site or any other such as Peter Schmid etc. My pictures attached show the items I'm speaking about. I've used the search button to no avail. I did find a thread which spoke about the same subject; http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/166098-vacuum-devices-85-300d-t.html#post1291383 by Shorebilly but the problem didn't seem to get resolved there. Does anyone know if Canadian cars were different than the U.S models; or is it simply because its a 1985 and has had several years of vacuum related add-ons? I need to know what those extra parts are for!! Thanks |

Tried that one
Chris,
That one does not apply to my application, thats the 1984 California/1985 Federal version. My setup has more parts than that as shown in the images. Thanks though. I'd REALLY like to know what the items are that are photoed; particularily the first shot (bottom left of centre in photo); this item is the closeup in photo #2. Again, these go to the EGR and Turbo, but the larger unidentified module pictured also has several lines running to other parts towards the firewall (I can photo where they go as well if it will help and post them) I hope theres someone here that knows the 1985's fairly well, I know the 85 can be a pain with the layers of vacuum add-ons. There was talk in the past (last year) that progress was trying to be made in understanding the 1985 California version and how it works (see above post by me). I think my setup is closest to the 85 California but its a Canadian car. Has anyone made progress with a California (W123 or W126)? My setup is defenitely not a Euro version as it has a Turbo that I believe came with the car. Blaine |

One more thing
What does the vacuum converter do and are there guidelines/specs for the amount of vacuum it releases?

Getting there....
Sam Ross has been helping me off site with figuring this out, but I'm still interested in what the rest of you think. I know there are more of you with knowledge that can lend a hand. I'm trying to figure out if my 300D is a true Federal or a California.
I believe I've identified items from the vacuum system that were in question. I'll break them into what I feel are Federal 1985 and California 1985 parts as per Peter Schmid. Please correct me if I'm wrong; I need to learn this. Federal: Vacuum converter (84) (close up of larger module in pic, 4 vacuum lines from it) California: Vacuum transducer (123) (blue module in pic) Switchover valve for vacuum transducer (125) (behind brake booster?) Switchover valve for vacuum converter (81) (beside vac converter in photo) Possbily the (81) I have is in fact for the (84) in the Federal version as each Federal and California plans have (81) and (84). What puzzles me is why I have a (123); vacuum transducer. It only shows (123) on the 1985 California diagram. I'm positive my 300D does NOT have a trap oxidizer (139) and it does NOT have an upright air filter canister near the passenger side headlight. My air filter is a flat round unit mounted over the turbo. Did any 1985 Federals come with a transducer module (123) but NOT the rest of the California items (trap oxidizer, upright air filter etc) ? I've yet to find the switchover valve for the boost pressure aneroid (126), anyone know where its located? As well, where is the control unit located? Are (125) and (81) electricly controlled? Progress is being made, mostly from the knowledge posted here. Please help me get over the hump, I'm close. Thank you for your help Blaine
