240d ignition parts???
My car is a 1982 240d manual. I am trying to order an ignition housing (MBZ076403) and tumbler (MBZ013048). I plan to use the orginal switch in order to save $50. All the sites I have been looking at say chassis "123.123 - from 110871*- up to 208266"
website: http://www.mercedes-benz-parts-direct.com When I looked up my car information from the VIN it said I had Chassis 123.12310343505. VIN WDBAB23A3CB343505 http://www.mbclub.ru/mb/vin/?lng=eng It looks like there is no match b/w chassis'? Can I just order ignition parts for an 82 240d online (if the infromation is correct) and trust they will work. And will my old switch on the back of the housing (I imagine original) work with the new ignition housing? Much gratitude to anyone who can assist. Last edited by breadrb; 09-03-2007 at 02:08 PM. |

I have updated the links if you were trying and getting nowhere. This stuff is so confusing for a newbe. But the journey is the reward.

What I am really trying to say (sorry if I am naive) is what is the best way to get the parts I need? And will my original switch (connected to wire harness) work with a new steering lock housing?

You need a part that was produced for your chassis number range. Others may work, or may be subtly different.
Is always easiest to call Phil or Roy and give them your vin and let them do the rest. Any dealer should be able to do the same.

Is there anyway to do this on the internet? Or on my own?

Since you're a newbie, as we all were at one time, give Phil or Roy a call. Their prices are usually competitive and you're able to speak with very knowledgable people. No one is shipping parts today anyway!

Click "Buy Parts" at the top of the page. There will be flashing phone numbers on the page.

Have you VIN handy when you call Phil or Roy. They will be able to get you the right parts.

If the car has it's original engine, it is a Diesel engine and there's no ignition housing or tumbler used. Ignition happens by heat as fuel-air mixture gets hot when compressed inside cylinder. The engine doesn't actually need any electrical help to run once it's started. Electrical glow plugs are used to make cold starting easier. They heat up the pre-chambers (places where fuel is sprayed in each cylinder) to make sure the fuel-air mix gets hot enough to ignite, even if engine is cold.
