603? 606? 350 Sdl

The engine in a 94 350SDL is 606, correct? If i want to replace it with a 300, then I would need to find a donor from a 95 or newer 300, as these are essential y the same engine with different bore, correct? This would be the most straightforward upgrade. To put in a 603 from a 87-94 300 would not be as straightforward, correct?

I might have a line on a "project" upgrade for my '85 300d...if I can get it cheap enough.

It should be the OM603.971 Also known not-so-lovingly as the "rod bender". Suffice it to say that it has a mixed record for longevity.

The 3.0L 603 from the '86-'87 SDL (or an '87 300D) should fit.

606 could probably fit in there (plenty of room ) but it'd likely be a bit more work....then again it could be worth it, since that engine has an additional 35+ horsepower over the 3.0 603 motor.

Problem would be finding a 606 (cheaply)...then again 603's aren't plentiful either....

terms..

Bigbilly..

Just confirming a few things here.....

86 + 87 300SDL was a 3 liter 603 engine in a 126 chassis ( or 124 for 1987)

90 + 91 350SDL + 92-95 300SD or 350SD were all full sized (126 and 140 chassis) with the 3.5 Liter 603 engine known as the rod bender

The mid to later 90's E series had a 606 engine, non-turbo, then turbo in 98,99. This is a simliar bottom end to the 603 engines with a dual overhead cam head. It has been swapped back into 603 engined cars, but takes some work.

So,

When I read about people swapping out the 3.5L (350) Rod bender for a 3.0L engine. They are talking about the 603 from the late '80's and not the newer engine from the W210 body style (and I think the '95 124). I would not have guessed that. As I understand it, the block is nearly identical, except for the bore. Theoretically, a "rod bender" 603 for a "good" 603 should be a relatively easy sway... and the 603's are slightly more available and reasonable ($$$$) then the 606's. Thanks

Is the 603 a sleeved engine like the 617?
