Jeep Inplant
Well the inplant of the 5 cylinder into my 86 Cherokee is going pretty well got the motor in the hole the drivers side mount it all made and bolted in, the right side guna take a little more work due to the tubo waste gate being in the way but shouldnt be to bad, cut a little bit of the fire wall out to make changing oil filters easier and to let the motor sit back a little farther I dont know why they didnt bump back the fire wall from the factory there's nothing behind it at all wich is very good for me, I will try and get some pictures up within the next few days, 1 thing I do need to figure out is how to hook up the oil pressure gauge, what kinda fitting does the MB engine use ? it looks like a bubble flair line with metric flair nut the jeep uses 1/8 pipe thread so Ill have to find something to convert that, no way to fit the AC compressor where it is so Im working on finding a way to do that, thinking maybe and electric compressor there fairly small anymore and with an inverter would run just fine, I looked at the compressor off of a prius hybrid but it runs on 200V AC so thats out there are a bunch of small compressors on Ebay for cheap so Ill probably give that a shot, other then that things went pretty smoothly hopefully it will be in and runnable very shortly

good show, I've got an '80 full size cherokee, I'd love to go from 8 cyls to 5. If I ever made the switch, I always figured that I'd somehow use the 'benz gauges... I wonder if the MBZ engine will peg your jeeps oil pressure gauge?
The euro version has the a/c compressor (sanden?) located @ the bottom of the engine.

I have a 617 motor in my Jeep YJ and I went to the hardware store for the fitings. I'm not sure if the oil pressure guage that hooks to the oil filter is the stock one from the jeep though. When i start it up it pegs the needle so I at least know there is pressure.
There is another guy that has made the conversion that you are doing. He lives in So Cal. He sent me an email and we talked back and forth a bit. I believe he saw my posting on Jeepsunlimited forum. I also live in So Cal (San Diego). I have not finished all the guages on my Jeep yet, but the temp guage is kinda funny to when it starts to register heat it pegs the needle also. If you come up with something I'd love to hear about it. In the YJ frame the ac pump fits but it is tight. I havent even got to that part yet. Keep going on your project... the guy who did his loves it and has already put thousands of miles on his. I am getting ready to regear my diffs so I have to save money. desertfam@cox.net Jon |

Someone on this forum said the 1/8" pipe thread was close enough to the MB metric fittings to use OK with no leaks. They were using it to hook a boost gauge to the intake manifold. So you might want to try that with some teflon tape or something.

What tranny are you mating the 5 cylinder to? Sorry I am just trying to catch up with this project

sorry for not filling you guys in, been to busy at work fixing other peoples cars to do anything with my own projects, I'm using the mercedes auto trans it will only be a 2 wheel drive jeep when done I have no use for 4 wheel and its just extra weight, 1 motor mount is done and in the other is half together just have to figure out what rubber mount Im going to use for the right side, the turbo makes it a little tight on that side but shouldn't be a big deal, due to axle and steering clearance Im guna have to make this a rear sump engine so that should be fun I contacted a member of this board that was making oil filter adapter plates about making me a set of oil pan rails (he has a flow jet) but I haven't heard back from him yet, still haven't decided on external oil pump or making the original pump fit with a longer drive shaft any input or if anyone has attempted this before I would love to hear after the next couple weeks this will hopefully slow down a bit and I can get back on it and get it running

www.swagelok.com makes compression fitting for tubing that go from metric to standard and could help for you gauge addaptation. Excellent compression fittings!
A very interesting conversion. I'm picking up a 1985 300TD and toying with this idea. Should be able to sell some stuff so that in the end the drivetrain will practically be free.

sorry for no updates for so long, well the project took a bit of a turn, the engine and transmission are now in the 240D my girlfriend bought for 200 bucks that needed an engine. So I had to find another engine for my jeep and I decided on trying an olds 350 diesel got a low millage GM replacement engine with all the updates done so it should be a good motor and allot easier transplant the front sump on the 617 made it almost inpossible to clear all the suspention and stearing parts. When I get to actaully work on it I will still update you guys on how it goes and pic's if you want them

I was thinking that moving the oil pump on the mb motor would be a very difficult task.

I agree its doable but would take allot of work and time I think this is a better option they make motor mounts for XJs to put a 350 chevy in them the olds diesel ueses the same mounts as an olds 350 gas so with a litlte modificaition it will bolt right in
