Aaargh! My transmission needs a rebuild!

Okay so I'm getting quoted 1500 for a transmission rebuild for my 83 300d. Is this a good price?

It doens't really matter because I can't afford it anyways, but I'm curious.

Is it possible to rebuild the transmission myself? For under...$500? Or is that wishful thinking?

I'm stranded for now. Riding my bike and walking is overrated!
