What's it worth? (good-condition 240D w/ broken camshaft)
Good morning,
I'm trying to find out if my car is worth anything. My dad has been talking about taking it away for a biodiesel conversion, but it's been sitting for 9 months and my wife wants it out of the garage - so I'm seeing if it has any value to anyone here. I spent several thousand dollars restoring it over the course of a couple of years, doing just about everything myself except the paint and the cylinder liners. However, 7000 miles after getting it running again, the camshaft snapped while driving (taking off from a stop, very low RPMs). I haven't pulled the cylinder head off to see if there's any damage to the valves & pistons. I just don't have the time or energy for a project car right now... It's a 1983 W123 240D with approx. 280k miles. The body is in great shape, I had the rust cut out and new metal welded in, and a very good paint job (not factory-perfect, but definitely several notches up from Maaco) It's a little grimy from sitting untouched in the garage for 9 months, but it cleans up and shines really nicely. The interior is in very good shape, with no cracks in the dash. There's some wear on the shift knob and some minor cracks in the finish of the wood trim, but it's pretty nice compared to other W123s I've seen. Electrical system is in good shape - glow plugs, starter, alternator, lighting, interior, stereo, electric sunroof all work properly. Front power windows work, rear power window switches don't work, but the window motors work. Alloy wheels were restored as part of my restoration, curb rash repaired and newly powdercoated. Tires are also pretty new but may have flat-spotted from sitting. 4-speed manual transmission in in near-perfect shape. New throwout bearing. I had the clutch disc inspected while the engine was out, and the guy at the tranny shop said it looked practically unused. Brakes are a little stiff, but I think that's due to a vacuum leak. Pads and rotors are in good shape. The engine got many new parts as part of the restoration, I hope most of them are still good: pistons, liners, valve springs, oil pump, many more. I still have the PartsShop receipt somewhere... Injection pump and injectors are in fine working condition. Injectors were rebuilt about 15k miles ago, and I had the pump tuned as part of the rebuild. I'll snap some pictures when I get home. |

I found a few pictures on my computer, mostly of the broken camshaft. Here's the engine bay with the valve cover removed, the night it died. I was expecting to find a broken timing chain. When I saw the snapped camshaft, I quietly put the valve cover back on and wiped away a tear.
