Engine Won't Shut Off
Hi all,
I know there are a lot of threads already regarding this issue, but none of them solves my problem (unless I missed something, I've been searching for the past 2 hours!!). Anyway, I just replaced my old primer pump to the new style pump, started the car and checked for leaks. Turned off the car and removed key..and engine was still running. So I tried to use the stop lever under the hood and it would not stop. I clamped the fuel line at the inline filter and pushed the stop lever, and it finally shut off. The car shuts down all the time when I remove the key before. The problem, was when I was replacing the primer pump, I must have removed a few vacuum lines. I reconnected the lines and the engine now stops when I turn the car off with the ignition. My question is...why didn't the engine shut off when I pushed the stop lever?? Does the stop lever cut vacuum?? Fuel?? or Both?? Should I adjust my throttle linkage?? check my shut-off valve?? If so, where can I find information about adjusting the linkage?? Thanks!! BTW..my car is 1984 300D Turbo and this is my 2nd post, so take it easy on me please . |

If your key is again shutting off engine, your shut off valve is working. Can't figure out why the lever didn't work tho.

On my '80 300 TD, I have to turn the idle adjust knob all the way down, or the stop lever just slows the engine, won't stop it. I don't know if your car has the idle adjustment on the dashboard. Maybe a high idle speed makes it harder for the stop lever to do the job. Steve

I don't think my car has that knob on the dashboard. And when I do push the lever, the engine does slow down and shakes, almost shutting off, but it doesn't. I had to crimp the fuel line and push the lever to stop it.
Maybe it's a good sign the engine is strong?? haha I did buy it for $650 in Los Angeles. I'm just worried that the stop lever won't shut the engine off. I have a feeling it's the throttle linkage. It does have a sluggish start to it up until the turbo kicks in, and I have read here that the linkage may have something to do with it. Does anyone know how to adjust the linkage?? It's as confusing as the vacuum system. Also, is this something I should be worried about?? |

Yes, it is very likely that the linkage is out of adjustment. Some time back someone posted specs on linkage length or at least a link to that info. You might try the search function up above to find that thread.
