How to replace 83 300SD hood star

I will probably get the dunce award for this question

I can do most any work on my 240D or 300SD but I am replacing a stolen hood star on the 300SD and can not figure how the base goes into the hole in the hood. It is notched to fit the emblem base but the round part seems slightly too big. does it need to be twisted or something?

Obviously the thieves are smarter than I am

Any ideas?
