This isn't the "infirm 240D" that I posted about a week ago, but it is from the same auction. Dallas Can Academy auctions donated cars. The complete list of cars can be found at:

http://www.texascarsforkids.org/

Once there, you can view the list of 100 or so cars being auctioned in Dallas starting at 9 Saturday morning (they auction another 50 - 60 cars in Fort Worth Saturday afternoon about 12:30).

The 240D is medium blue with the dark blue interior and appears to be in OK shape. There's also an 1973 powderder blue 280SE being auctioned and a couple of newer gas models. They don't let you get into the cars and they only start them (if possible) and rock them forward and back a couple of feet to show that the trans works somewhat.

Could be a sweet find for someone as prices tend to stay low. Anyone with any questions about the procedure (spelled out on the website) can call me at 972-717-4615.

Charity auctions are getting more and more popular. Goodwill has a big one here in Austin once a month. A friend told me they had some pretty good cars there so I went out and took a look last month. It was a disappointment overall. Most of the cars were in very poor condition and clearly not roadworthy; I couldn't tell any difference between them and the cars at an police impound auction where they sell abandoned cars. They always have a few diesel MBs. If the people are deducting blue book retail on their tax returns for these the IRS is getting a raw deal. I didn't stay for the bidding. The best strategy might be to buy one cheap just for parts and if it turns out better than that it is a bonus.

1974 240D being auctioned

Hey Guys -

Remember the flooding that Houston had a few weeks ago.
Hundreds (maybe thousands) of vehicles were underwater in
various underground parking garages.

A word to the wise.....

There was also a really bad hail storm in St. Louis Missouri, but a hail damage car is better than a water flooded car.

Anyway, i have to agree with John on the charity auction. I dont know many people who will donate a good looking, good running, car with no problems. Most of them look pretty bad. But there are always exceptions so dont get me wrong, it cant hurt to look.
