Yes, ANOTHER hazard/flasher post

Forgive my repetition, but I promise I've read all 52 matching posts uncovered using the search function.

Here's the deal - I bought an 81 240d several months ago and I've slowly worked thru many repairs with the help of this site. One thing that has totally baffled me is the electrical issues with the turn signal and hazards (I'm admittedly electrically challenged though).

My turn signals and hazards will work fine, for maybe for 5-6 seconds....and then stop (but stay lit). Sometimes, they won't flash at all. From what I can gather here, my model has both the flasher relay and hazards in the same expensive unit (and no seperate relay just foward of the shifter). I've checked ALL the bulbs and ALL the fuses...no problems there. Logically, I'd just replace the switch...but the PO gave me all his records and he replaced the switch in 2006? The switch looks brand new too...no soda or other gunk caked on it either, as I've pulled it out, fiddled with it, cleaned the prongs on the connection, etc.

Could this be a ground issue? The ground near the right headlamp is fine but I haven't gotten to the dash ground yet. I have no other electric problems though. I suppose I can't rule out that the 2006 part is faulty....but I want to make sure before I spend $90 replacing a relatively new part.

Many thanks for any insight..

Relay

I would consider trying a new relay...they are about $25.

Yeah, I believe you are in the same boat as me. The hazard switch is gigantic, and has the relay built in to it. I don't know what they were thinking.

I have one from my '77 that wouldn't click in to hazard mode, but the relay worked. I cleaned it up and got it to function, but then had a nicer looking one fall in my lap. If you want to try using it to see if it solves your problem, you're welcome to it. With a little effort, you might be able to combine the beauty of your nice switch with the functionality of my old one. Just a though.

so...

essentially you both think I should just try adding "another" relay into my system? I suppose I could just hide it under the console or something.....but I'll have NO idea how to splice that thing into existing. I guess it's worth a shot. Thanks for replying.

Actually, I was offering to give you a working one. If it works, you know what the problem was. If you're adventurous, you can use the pretty red button from yours with the good guts from the one I'm offering you, and end up with the best of both worlds.
