Is this cam too far gone?

This is the cam from my recently acquired spare head. Is it too far gone or it can still be saved?

My guess is toast, but I would take it to my favorite machinist and let him judge.

There is not douobt that the engine will run with it like that, the question is how long before the lobes wear off.

I would want to inspect the bearing areas before going further. The lobes might polish up okay. The hard surface area on mercedes cams is thick enough to easily allow one good polishing. You do not have to make a decision now unless you need the cam.
Just coat with axel grease slide into a cardboard tube and put it away. Save and number all the cam followers to go with it though as you take apart and perhaps the bearing towers. I should start attending pak rats anyoamous. Its also a lifesaver. My wife cannot throw me out. Too much junk involved that would have to go with me.

That's too far gone, unless we get nuked. Then you might need it to become the road warrier.

Otherwise, you should be able to find a better example from a parts car.

Looks okay to me. I'd give it brake fluid soak and scrub the lobes with #0000 steel wool, nothin more severe. Caint tell if lobes are worn until you can see em. Definitely keep it with spare head, camshaft timing varies. And whatever you do dont mix up the towers if ye ever put it to work.

Looks fine to me, pitting would be bad, but if not too deep LEAVE THE RUST ON IT (i mean if its really big chunks of course take it off) but this will help give you a heads up on when its time for a valve adjustment.

Brake fluid? I've never heard of using that. I was going to throw it in a friend's parts washer and leave it there until I remember it is there. Does brake fluid has some kind of properties I am not aware of that would help here?

Tell me more about this camshaft timming variation. Did they have different cams for the different 617.95X engines? How to ID them? Doing what I would do in a Volvo 200/700/900, I looked on the back of the cam and the mark there is the same as my other head. But, that is all I know.

Do not worry about mixing the towers: I will probably punch some marks on them to ID them as which tower for which head (Say, A1, A2, A3 and B1, B2, B3). I do not trust my memory...

Leave the rust on it? How come?

What i mean is, on the cam lobes LIghtly go over it to get the rust off of it, but leave most of it intact. This rust will show you where the cam lobe is hitting the rocker arm It wont hurt anything but do get all the rust off of the cam bearings.
