Just a good habit, maybe it`s just habit from work when I was an equipment operator.
I hammered this into my daughter when she was learning to drive. forget to check the oil? then car doesn`t go anywhere. But DAD!! you don`t understand!! too bad. now she is 34 and really on top of her maintenance
she is now more in tune with what BS the shops are trying to do to her.

If checking your oil is THAT important, then why don't they put something on the dash so you see that it's at the proper level (other than an idiot light that tells you you're low)? That's just ridiculous to check the oil each time before you crank the car. That's a disease, a sickness. The only cure is more cowbell (Saturday Night Live sketch).
I check mine, like, never. I change it every 4-5,000 miles and never had a problem. I fill it up to the high mark on the dipstick now (since the light came on for the first time ever; I previously filled it anywhere between the low and high mark). If you run low, your light will come on at that time. It tells you that you're NOW a bit low on oil, not that your car is about to blow up.
