Advice on botched cruise amp replace job

OK - first of all - mea culpa - I botched this job.

I used a cheap made-in-China socket on the bolt that mounts the cruise amp bracket, and it slipped on the first pull. So the bolt head is rounded! I tried a wrench next and that spun too, thanks to the mess made by Mr Cheapo socket set. Resorted to vice grips and tore some little chunks off the bolt's head but nada.

Real nice job too - lying on my back with my head beside the pedals and my legs on the reclined drivers seat ... thank God I am slim and can fit under the steering wheel. I did leave a good footprint on the headliner!

I replaced the cruise amp and I NOW HAVE CRUISE with the simple expedient of bending back the tabs carefully on the metal can, and removing the circuit board, BUT I do not like leaving a job in this messy state.

Does anyone know of a magic tool that will work in a situation like this?

Ocasionally for tight areas you can get a smaller nut splitter. It does exactly what the name implies. There is a chisel held in a loop. When you tighten the bolt on the chisel it splits the nut. Usually does not damage the bolt at all. When the nut splits there is very little or almost no tension left on the threads. Thats because the nut is made larger by the forced split.
Or perhaps you could drill into the side of the remains of the nut. Probably damage the bolt though. Wear safety glasses if you are doing something like that. You might even manage to cut it off with a dremel type tool. Others may have more creative ideals.

Leave the bracket on and remove the screws holding the amp to the bracket. You will need a stubby phillips head screw driver to do it. This is what I ended up doing with mine, but I ended up doing it before I totally stripped the bolt head.

Odds are you have been trying to loosen the "nut" that is welded onto the bracket. Go to the opposite side and in a recess is a 10 (or 8; can't remember exactly) mm. hex head bolt that will need a short extension (or a deep socket) to get to. If you are able to get to it with vice grips, it's not the bolt head; at least not on mine BTDT.

See post #10 and #12 and #13.....So I can't get my damn CC amp out...

IIRC you are right. The nut is welded and the bolt is removed from the other side. Take a good look at it before you do any more. Tom 82 300D
