When you replace the rubber mounts, make sure they have their little heat shields installed. The heat shields do help keep the rubber from degrading.

Do they come with the heat shields? I just let the guy at the parts store order them for me because they were cheap. If they don't come with it, will I find them for sale separately on most MB parts sites?

The heat shields look like this:

http://catalog.worldpac.com/mercedesshop/sophio/quote.jsp?header=header.jsp&footer=&product=6170940220&partner=mercedesshop&baseurl=http://catalog.peachparts.com/&clientid=catalog.mercedesshop&cookieid=1CQ0J3JZ42750S9DBY

You may already have them installed, so you can reuse them. If not, you can order them here, or the dealer may have them.

I have never seen these heat shields, are they something that only come on the 617?

The heat shields are a factory retrofit (nowadays it is called a recall). They never came installed in the air cleaner until a few years after.

Before that these rubber mounts where usual wear items that were replaced often with hose pieces and other stuff...

You might also inspect your motor mounts. Usually when they are bad the vibrations are amplified to things like the air cleaner mounts and cause them to break.
