How do I get the transmission dipstick out?
This may sound like a stupid question, BUT, I can't get the transmission dipstick out of my '86 300SDL 126 with 603 engine.
It looks like the top may pivot to release, but it won't budge by hand force. So I thought I better ask before I use a vise grip on it. P E H |

Paul, there is a "lock" that rotates and holds the dipstick in place. It's a bit difficult to describe, but, the black plastic fingers that are below the cap need to pivot upwards and unlock the stick.
Once you do it the first time.......you'll smack yourself in the head........it seems obvious.........but it's not. |

Yep, flick out the black plastic latch and pull on the red knob.

Brian and Forced.
Dipstick problem solved. I was originally trying the pivot the red top part. I feel more stupid now, its so easy but was not originally evident. I wonder why the trans dipstick has to be locked in? Thanks guys. P E H |

I guess they lock it so that nobody steals it. |

Classic Teutonic overengineering.
