Hello. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the Mercedes 220D. I have heard that the Mercedes diesel engines are great, but i wanted to get a few possible opinions on this particular model. The one in question is for sale near me by the original owner, and has been garage kept it's whole life. It looks immaculate from the pictures i've seen. It has 105,000 miles on it. I'm looking for a good, reliable car, and was wondering how good this particular model is. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!

The 220D is a great little car. The basic engine is very reliable, it is a little low on power though. You learn to plan ahead when merging or passing. I drove a 1971 220D for about the last year and a half 100mi a day at 70 to 75 mph most of the way. It will do it with out compliant but it is a little loud at those speeds. Be sure to look for hidden rust in the rocker pannels floor pans and around the head lights. Get underneath and bang on the floor pans with a hammer the under coating is quite thick and can hide a lot. Even though it is a classic car dont expect it to ever have much of a collectors value and don't pay too much. If you do get it maintain it like you love it and drive it like you hate it (foot to the floor), and it will give you good service.

what year is it? I would take it to an independent MB shop for a complete look over as the odometer only went to one hundred thousand miles on the older cars ,my 74 240 d showed 79 k when I bought it 179? 279? 379? well you get the idea.....

1972 220D

Confused a bit myself, I mistakenly wrote "1978 240" instead.
The correct year and model is 1972 220D
