Exclamation Battery/alternator car wont start!!

1984 300sd

Hey Guys!!

Boy I haven't been on here in a while. I've pretty much fixed everything on this car using the knowledge from this forum. (Thanks Guys!!)

From Changing the locks, to water pump/raditor, valve adjustment, to installing a grease kit.

well anyways, I got into an accident the other day.

Not much damage. Was able to drive the car back home.

Changed the oil, started the engine for a bit.

Then left the car for a couple of weeks. Tried to start the car and the battery was dead.

I used a portable battery jumper, the car cranks, but doesn't start...

the jumper reads check the alternator, and then is dead.
.....

What im thinking is that hopefully all the car needs is a new battery and that the jumper(cold starting 450amps) is just too weak to start the car.

Also, the battery indicator light always came on when driving.

Think a new battery has 850 cold starting amps

Anyways any help would be much appreciated!

thanks,

Tony

Mine are 85 300Ds but the principles are the same. You don't say where the damage occured. When I read you had an accident, I immediately suspected there may have been some damage to one or more electrical cables/wires, grounding, drawing down the battery.

US-made batteries do wear out, usually every three years. I still tell yarns about the original Bosch battery in Old Blue (picked up at Sindelfingen). That thing lasted 12.5 years. When it finally passed away, we buried it with full military honors.

Each 2.5K miles I change oil and check fluids, including the battery. Top off ONLY with DISTILLED water.

Might be charging system problem. Simple --- very unsophisticated check of the charging system:

+ Multimeter adjusted to 20+ DC Volts.
+ Put multimeter leads on the battery; take reading; should be about 12.2V.
+ Have buddy move the key to the first or second (but not starting) position; meter should read about 11.05.
+ Start the car; running, the meter should read 12.5 up to 13V.

Might also be a good idea to check the length of the brushes on the voltage regulator (VR) and the tension adjustment on the belt and tightness of the sheave driving the alternator.

Good luck.

Same symptoms.....

Was an alternator and the neutral safety switch on the side of the tranny.

Sweeet got it working!!

Found out that the battery was just really dead.

I jumped the car with my dad's 1987 300td, and the portable jumper.

That gave it enough juice to start the car.

From there the car charged the battery, and its been working good ever since.

So im guessing, I prolly just left the lights on or door open, or something and drained the battery for a couple of weeks.

Anyways, thanks for all the help!!!!
