It's supposed to be some sort of Mercedes engine but I've never seen one like it. I've never heard of any of the older 4 bangers have anything near 86 hp.

I think that Tom is correct and that it is a rusty version of one of these.....Thermo King Mercedes-Benz Engine I.D. See Kerry's link.

Don't know about the horsepower claims. Seems high for the 636.

Boy...you sure do like project engines......!

I guess the valve cover and the hp claim threw me. I had a feeling it was a OM636.
I like sharing unusual Mercedes' I find locally.

They had those on the 40' containers we towed on barges to Alaska. Big oil capacity as you couldn't get back there to check them very easy and they had to be able too run unattended for weeks at a time.

It looks rusty as all hell, think it even works?

I agree about it being a nice generator, 38 hp = 22.8 kW
of course you'd need to actually mount a generator to it

probably could pull 10 kW easy.
