sometimes i really feel like i'm driving a tractor... erg.
1987 300D with the 3.0 liter turbodiesel engine
my idle fluctuates. i know i must need engine mounts, because it shakes like a mo-fo.. i'll try to explain it exactly. when the car is cold, it will idle at like 300 rpm... and shake the entire car so bad you can see it from 10 yards away. it's very loud in the cabin and very obnoxious. even sometimes at temperature, the idle will drop until i rev it up and it "catches" and idles back at normal rpm. -note: it isn't missing. it's just idling like it's a bored out 454 with a hot cam and stuff. but not as nice sounding ![]() anyway, the car runs just fine, doesn't smoke much at all. accelerates great, vacuum works. 198,xxx miles on the engine, could anyone provide insight as to what this could be? another issue that could be directly or indirectly linked to this- i have an extra little "clack" in my diesel idle. it isn't a miss, it doesn't shake the car. it speeds up with the rpm and it's pretty loud. you hear it as the engine makes one revolution. it's kind of hard to explain. any ideas? i've heard valve tick and it isn't that i don't think, it sounds like someone's chucking a bolt at the engine block or something...

It sounds like you might need to adjust/upgrade your rack damper bolt.

i had a feeling it could be that, except it's sporadic. it isn't like this all the time, just when it feels like it. and it happens to be more prevalent on a cold-start. on a hot start, it isn't there 90% of the time. it's mind boggling..literally.

If its metalic clatter/rattle then rubber air filter housing mounts could be suspect. BTW, you can retorque engine mounts - probly oughta be done every couple yrs anyhow. Definitely replace em, figure vibes transmitted direct to flex disc. And caint be healthy for any engine components including IP, belt driven PS pump etc. Hell, yer oil cooler and tranny lines could be shakin against something too, soon to wear holes in em.
