W126 Wood cover on ashtray dropped off! Help!
How do you re glue the thing? (The burlwood cover to the ashtray below the radio?)
Would gorilla glue be best? I bought Elmers "Ultimate" glue and a 2 1/2" C Clip but it doesn't look like the C clip would hold on the glue when it dries, because I cannot figure out how to remove the ashtray (the entire sliding unit) out of the car. (The silver ashtray itself inside the sliding unit pops right out) Should I buy another C clip also? Is Elmers good enough for metal to wood? (they were out of gorilla glue. Any pre cleaning on the wood surface needed? I guess it dries overnight? Thanks for your suggestions.

After you remove the ashtray itself you can see two screws on the cross piece under the open area at the front just remove those and pull out the unit. You have to kind of jiggle it around as you pull it so you don't snag anything else.

I have remounted the burlwood by buying double sided tape. NAPA sells it

My local indy suffs the backside of the wood and also the areawhere it mounts with a piece of scotchbrite pad, and then uses a two part expoxy to glue it back together. I used a screw clamp with paint sticks as buffers to hold it together as the expoxy set.
I glued the ashtray on my 420SEL in this fashion two months ago, and knock on wood, it hasn't fallen off. |

I've become quite fond of the Polyurethane glue. Gorilla Glue or any of it's competitors will provide bond strength that is just fantastic. It will never come apart again for any reason.
The only trick is to wet the components before using the glue and to use 1/2 as much glue as you think you need. The glue expands to 4X the size when it's liquid and it has to go somewhere. Use a bit too much and you'll be scraping away with a sheetrock knife in the morning. |

Gorilla glue is good, yet I have used alot of "Shoe Goo" From WalMart.
If it will glue kids shoes back it will hold most anything. Bumper strips, moldings, do-dads, you name it and it is thick and dries quick. Find it in the shoe dept. Awesome goo!! Dave |

I use Liquid Nails, available in a small tube. Works fine, does not expand.
