Might be built in the US, but it was German engineering
Yes, good to hear something good is being built in the US, but diesel is German technology.

When I think about what marine engines were good or bad, there are not many on the "bad" side. A Seattle Co I worked for had a tug with a Bessemer Cooper, direct reversible, everyone freaked when they had to go to Alaska on that boat
The rest of that class of boat had twin screw with V16, 149 Jimmies. (fine engines, for simi desposable ![]() ![]()

I talked to someone with a 12V Cummins that was tricked out a bit getting in the high 280HP or so and still gets above 20MPG. Or so he says

On another note... My purely mechanical IDI 94 Ford 7.3 Turbo Diesel made by International gets a 0-60 time of around 10 seconds and still gets close to 20MPG.
No computers! (Well I guess it does if you count the auto transmission) But that doesn't count does it??? ![]()

I can't say that it shocks me to see how many people don't know the durability of International trucks. I have had many in my time including my Scout. The gas engine of the Scout usually goes past 300,000 miles because of being over built. The 345 engine is the size of a 454 and weighs 700lbs plus.
The famous powerstroke can just go on forever. International had to 'step' in for ford because fords' diesel basically sucks. Anything early 80's, not too sure of the exact year, is when ford diesels choked the most. As of late, IH & Ford had a joint union to 'assemble' engines into fords at their blue oval plant in mexico.(cost) I dont know if the engines are 100% american but what is now. I'm hoping my 617 last for over 600,000, im at 300,000 now. Also because i bought her for $1900, just about to pay for a $3000 trans and i'm just starting to do the basics. $$$$$$

616 or 617! Look at how many more old MB's are running around the planet than any other car - and most of those others filling up the junk yards of the world were produced in much greater numbers that the 123's and 126's.
There was a post on another MB net some time ago, from a guy that was asking how much he could sell his old 240D for, it had over 900K miles on it. In the end, it was still such a good car that he passed it on to his grandson to drive off to college in.

I have only had my 300CD for 16,000 miles (197,000 on the car), but I beleive it will go for thousands more. The quality of the OM 617 is awsome! I have heard a lot of good about the MB Diesels, Cummins, and Power Stroke. I think they ALL are good. The older mechanicly injected, iron block/head engines are designed to last a long time and seem to bee the best. I am liking the reliability of the OM617, and am looking forward to THOUSANDS of trouble free miles!

yeah I'm with you: 616 or Toyota 2H (almost certain these are HINO). Followed closely by 617 and Toyota H and 1HZ.
The amount of Landcruiser HJ47/45s running around with broken speedos (having clipped at 1m km) is LARGE. I know no-one needs persuading about 616's though ![]()

My oversight on Australia, Land Cruiser rules the bush country where the HINO does superb, but the gas Land Cruiser also does quite well. Check my signature, I have a Nissan Patrol which is based on the 69 model made by the ministry of defence here. They put the super overkill W04D in that.
