1998 E300D-T Steering Noise, Pump? Leak? Air in Rack?
1998 E300D-T, 83,450 miles
W210, OM606.962, 722.6 Hope everyone has enjoyed autumn so far...some new MB projects, I'm sure! I have been having this slight annoyance with my 1998...whenever I take a turn at higher speeds and sharper angles (i.e. leaving my neighborhood onto a 45-mph main road, u-turns, etc.), I hear a whine and motor-noise from the steering wheel. Upon further inspection, I noticed some liquid surrounding the reservoir (black cap next to fuel lines and fuel filter). I have never adjusted the PS fluid since it is not a maintenance item in the service booklet (but neither is the lifetime-fill transmission oil, right?!?!?). Anyway, what could be causing this problem. Has anyone experienced a similar whine from the power steering system? Am I looking in the right place, and what can I do to correct the problem? Thanks!!!

Have you checked the level of the PS fluid?

No...because I'm unsure of how to check the level...hot? cold? engine running?

Theres a dipstick on the underside of the cap. Engine off.

Dip stick has a hot and cold fill level IIRC.
There is a hose clamp that was allowing a little leakage on mine. Whined turning right when low.

I believe the fluid level was OK...MAX mark at 20C (had driven it about 1.5 hours before measuring...is 20C or 80C the correct temperature?). I will check clamps...how about any o-rings or seals that could be leaking or allowing air in?

20c would be the cold fill level and 80c the hot.
Turning the wheel lock to lock against the bump stop bleeds it. If its whining it probably a bit low. Check it again both cold and hot. I dont think there is an oring at the HP line that attaches to the pump but the detail is poor so cant say for certain.

Slightly Below Min.
The level was slightly below the minimum line at 20C. What should be the next step? Is there a leak in the system, or is it normal for a car to lose a small amount of PS fluid over 85K miles?

Mine was doing this too. I found the level to be low and located a small leak from the hose and fitting on the lower right side of the resorvoir. I cut off about 1/4" of the hose and re-clamped it and it's been fine ever since...

The fluid can foam up if it is very low which leads to false readings. Best to check it when cool after sitting a while so any foam subsides. Use the proper fluid, you can buy it at the dealer in 1L bottles and it is made by Febi I think. It doesn't hurt to suck all the fluid you can from the reservoir and refill it with fresh stuff since you will have plenty.
