Hello all,
I recently happened upon a 76 300D that has a pretty severe engine knock, and possibly some power loss (although I have never driven a diesel mercedes before so I have nothing to compare it to). Any common problems with these cars that I should start with? I have owned VW diesels before but never a mercedes.

Anything else I should know about this car? The body is in excellent shape, and the engine seems to start fairly easily, I am just weary to drive it with the engine knock.

Is it a knock or a nailing sound? Can you get a good recording of the engine running?

I would say it is definitely more of a knock. I will try to get a good recording of it.

My ex bro in law gave a 300sdl. It knocked, I mean bad. Ended up being a bent connecting rod. Replaced the rod and drives like a dream.

BTW he bought it with that knock 6 years ago and put 150k+ on her thinking that is how a diesel sounds.

Has it been running on alternative fuel or only D2?
