I have a new (to me) 84 300sd and it have a lot of play in the gear shift. its my understanding that this is because of worn plastic bushings. Can someone explain this to me in more detail.

Replacing all shifter bushings on W126 - p.1
When I did this I only replaced the one bushing where the shifter connects to the rod. I didn't do the other ones. So far so good after about a year. Danny

On the manual transmission I found it 100x easier and faster to do it with my feet sticking out the passenger side of the car. There is only one bushing on the auto so its not as bad but it might still help. I went from hours to minutes...

Actually the old bushings were Rubber
and they did wear out quite quickly, why they would only last maybe--15 years, can you believe that?
Seriously though, the new ones are some type of Polymer material, I replaced mine two years. BTW make sure your rods are properly adjusted too, it will be intuitive to do this when you are down there............. |
